Pattern Testing

Thank you for your interest in pattern testing! Helping other designers get their patterns ready for sale has been one of the most rewarding parts of my quilting journey, and has given me so many new skills and a fabulous quilting community.  I’d love to share the same with you!

How It Works

Testing is a key step in getting a new quilt pattern ready for release.  Getting feedback from pattern testers for a pattern before release makes sure that the pattern is understandable and works well to create the quilt as designed.

By signing up below you will be added to my Pattern Tester email list.  When a pattern is ready for testing, I will reach out to quilters on the list with a mock-up of the quilt pattern, fabric requirements, the timeline for testing and release, and any other information you might need. Within a week I will select testers and send an email with the pattern and a full breakdown of the release timeline. I will also add you to a group message in Instagram to allow you to communicate with other testers and share information real-time as I have found working with other testers to be some of my most rewarding quilting experiences.

What is expected of a tester?

  • Complete a quilt top (only the top, it does not need to be quilted) and share (at least) one photo of the whole quilt top with me by the deadline provided in the welcome email.  If you will be unable to complete the test within the timeframe, it is expected that you reach out by email or Instagram message as soon as possible.

  • Advise of any errors or issues you encounter while testing the pattern.

  • Make the quilt from the pattern as designed/written. Any deviation from the pattern should be discussed before the test is completed.

  • Keep the contents of the pattern confidential prior to release.

  • Complete a brief survey provided at the end of the testing period regarding the pattern, suggestions you may have, and your testing experience.

  • Share two in-progress photos and one photo of your completed quilt top on Instagram (additional posting is at your discretion).  Photos should be clear and well-lit, but do not need to be taken professionally.  Some great tips about photographing your quilts can be found at Suzy QuiltsSouthern Charm Quilts and Patchwork and Poodles.

What can you expect from the designer?

  • A polished pattern to test - the pattern you receive at the start of the test will have already been reviewed by a technical editor and I will have made (at least) a test block and re-checked the math prior to sending it to you.

  • Regular communication in the group message and by email regarding corrections, changes, tips and suggestions I receive throughout the process.

  • Any changes or alterations to be shared in a timely manner.

  • All dates and deadlines communicated in the welcome email and plenty of notice should the timeline change for any reason.

What do you receive as a tester?

  • A copy of the final published pattern on release day.

  • Connection with your fellow testers via Instagram group chat.  This gives you a place to interact with your fellow testers, discuss fabric pulls, troubleshoot any problems you may be having, and make new friends.  This has been one of the most rewarding parts of pattern testing for me, and has given me so much inspiration and so many opportunities to collaborate.

  • To be featured in at least one Instagram post surrounding the launch with your photos credited to you using your name and Instagram handle.  The photo(s) you provide may be featured with up to 2 other testers in a single post, and each tester will be featured individually in my Stories posts at least once in the week following the launch date.

  • While I am not able to compensate testers financially at this time, I do want to provide a thank-you for the time and energy invested in the testing process. If you are comfortable sharing your address, I would love to send you a physical token of thanks.
